The European Commission is reportedly ready to an accept an offer from eBook publishers and Apple to end an antitrust probe, Reuters said Tuesday. The investigation began after other retailers, such as Amazon, were unable to compete with eBook prices set by Apple and its publishing partners. The publishers include Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, News Corp, Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinch and Hacette Livr. The European Commission apparently first received the offer in September and spoke with Apple’s competitors and European consumers before giving the offer a thumbs-up. The final nod of approval is expected next month, Reuters said. A similar situation occurred in the United States last spring.
